Hello
Jocelyn is an honors student at James Madison University. Majoring in Communication Sciences & Disorders and minoring in Writing Rhetoric & Technical Communication; she is a first-generation college student eager to explore all areas of speech-language pathology!
My Story
My interest in the field of speech pathology began when my two youngest brothers were diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. When I was younger, I didn't understand what made them worthy of receiving this diagnosis and was curious about how I could be a support system for them. One of the defining features of their diagnosis was a developmental language delay from an early interventionist. I was curious about the process of assessment and the complexities of their diagnosis which inspired me to learn more about this field. After shadowing two speech-language pathologists during my brother's sessions, I knew I wanted to pursue communication sciences as a career.

A defining moment for me was in my introduction class, I had the opportunity to visit my university's speech pathology clinic. During our visitation, we got to interact with various forms of AAC devices. What especially piqued my interest was when I got to test a form of AAC that used eye gaze to control the device and produce speech. I was astonished by how the technology removed the barrier of physical touch. I even remember saying to a classmate that if I didn’t know the device was controlled through eye gaze, I would have thought it was mind control! I hope that this website inspires others to learn more about the perspectives and life experiences of others that we interact with on a daily basis :)
